Curriculum II

Greetings

From the Director, Matthew Panciera

Gustavus is unusual in having two general education choices. Both general education programs introduce students to a variety of ways of knowing. Curriculum I students choose from a list of courses to fulfill area requirements. Curriculum II, which is limited to sixty students, is an integrated sequence of courses focused on the development of the Western tradition with comparisons to non-Western cultures, the examination of values, and the theme of the individual and community. Retreats and trips to the Twin Cities for cultural events also foster a sense of community within the group.

Although CII attracts some of the college’s best students, it is not an honors program. We welcome all students who are intellectually curious and interested in interdisciplinary learning, the examination of values, and good discussion. If you are interested in how things connect—the past to the present, knowledge to your life—if you are interested in the big questions—How did our society come to be this way? What do I value and why? What makes for a good life?—CII may be for you!
