Request for Coca-Cola Educational Partnership Funding

Funding is available for projects initiated by departments, programs, campus-wide initiatives or advocacy groups that focus on enhancing sustainability and community health. Priority will be given to student-focused initiatives achieving the greatest impact on community well-being, broadly understood. While the highest priority will be accorded to campus initiatives, the committee will also consider projects involving Gustavus students in partnership with the surrounding communities.

  1. Application
    1. Deadlines: Applications may be submitted at any time after September 22, 2014. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2014. Announcement of awardees may begin by December 1, 2014.
    2. Eligibility (in priority order): Existing student groups whose staff or faculty advisors agree to provide project oversight; classes and their instructors; individual students working with faculty or staff supervision. Other categories of participants, representing a variety of campus initiatives, may be eligible; check with the committee.
    3. Submit a completed application online using the form below. Upon submission, a copy of your application information will be e-mailed to you.
    4. Project Proposals/grant requests become the property of Gustavus Adolphus College.
  2. Grant Categories
    1. General Information: Grants will be directed to projects that articulate a clear purpose and plan for enhancing sustainability and health, principally on campus. Projects involving campus-community partnerships will also be considered. Projects can address such topics as enhancing healthy, life-long activity; sustainable packaging and other modes of food distribution; water stewardship; access to good food for all, regardless of income; energy efficiency; contributions to climate protection (e.g., re-forestation, run-off control, green modes of transport, etc.). Funds may also be used to bring subject matter experts to campus to lecture, consult, and teach, especially in applied areas of sustainability, health, environment, and well-being.
    2. Research and development grants: The committee invites proposals for researching and developing projects related to the issues listed above. By their nature, research proposals will not necessarily describe concrete outcomes but should at least indicate a range of possible or likely “next steps” that will be investigated during the research period.
      1. Research and development grants will normally range from $1000-$5000.
    3. Implementation grants: The committee invites proposals for specific projects designed to have a positive impact on the Gustavus community. It will grant priority to proposals that provide a clear plan of work, realistic scheduling, adequate staffing (in terms of both numbers and appropriate skills), and a plan to measure the project’s impact.
      1. Implementation grants will normally range from $5000-$10,000.
  3. Proposals. Each application must address the following questions:
    1. One (1) paragraph project abstract of 200 words
    2. What is the basic problem or issue to be addressed during the grant period?
    3. What impact on the community is the project likely to have on what you are trying to achieve?
    4. What steps will be taken to accomplish the goals of the project during the grant period? Supply a brief plan of work.
    5. Who will be engaged in the work? Supply a one-page CV or resume for each person who will be involved with the project on a regular basis. Supply full contact information for any person(s) whom you plan to hire as a consultant. If an individual student is applying, please supply a signed supporting letter from your faculty/staff advisor. If a student group is applying, please supply a signed supporting letter from your advisor as well.
    6. How will you measure the outcomes and impact of your work during the grant period? Please be specific about methodology, assessment techniques and evaluation of the anticipated results.
    7. Anticipated project completion date
    8. If the proposed project will require contributions from college funds for its upkeep or staffing after it has been completed (e.g., a building project that will require regular maintenance, or a new heath initiative involving staff training and retention), provide an estimate of those costs.
  4. Budget Funds awarded must be used in the 2014-15 fiscal year – Ends May 31, 2015
    1. Please complete the budget form (below).
    2. Grants will be awarded for as long as funds are available. Only one proposal per project phase, per funding cycle will be accepted. Recipients of Research and Development grants may apply for Implementation grants in later funding cycles.
    3. Funds may be used to acquire materials and supplies, pay printing costs, pay for travel or related expenses (the costs of a relevant conference or training program, for example) and to offset room and food expenses.
    4. Honoraria for student employees and for staff or faculty who work on the grant project will be considered, but not guaranteed.
    5. Food costs, if applicable, will be reimbursed provided itemized and reasonable receipts are submitted.
    6. Note: All reimbursements for automobile mileage are capped at a maximum of $350.
  5. Reporting
    1. Recipients of grants must file a status report, including accounting for their costs to date, by May 31, 2015.
      1. Depending on the scope of the project, other interim reports and accounts may be required.
    2. Grant recipients must submit a final report, addressing the outcomes of the activities undertaken within one month of the completion of the proposed project or the end of the semester, whichever comes first, to Steve Kjellgren at skjellgr@gustavus.edu.
    3. Grant recipients will be invited to present to the campus and Coca Cola representative, their accomplishments or project outcomes. This will take place in Mid May 2015.
  6. Grant recipients who fail to complete final reports will not be considered for additional funds.
