Join us for Homecoming and Family Weekend festivities this year! Parents, alumni, and friends of the College are invited to return and reconnect on this momentous weekend.

Family Weekend 2009 Schedule

Friday, October 9

Class Visits – Families are invited to attend classes throughout the day and experience firsthand the academic programs with your student.  Your student should ask his/her professor for permission for you to attend class.

8 p.m. – Homecoming Variety Show and Coronation of King and Queen - Alumni Hall, Johnson Student Union

 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. – Weekend Movie UP – Wallenberg Auditorium, Nobel Hall

Saturday, October 10

9 a.m.  - Fun Run – Three Flags (5K run around Campus Drive) $5 onsite registration.

9 a.m. - Granlund Sculpture tour – Christ Chapel

9 a.m.  - Seminar: Planning Ahead for a Semester AbroadHeritage Banquet Room, Jackson Campus Center. This session is a great opportunity for parents to begin navigating the study abroad program at Gustavus and to learn about all of the different possibilities.

9 – 9:50a.m. -  City tour and Coffee shop stop – Meet at Three Flags for a guided tour of St. Peter.                  

10 a.m. - Morning Praise – Christ Chapel

10:30a.m. -  3:00p.m. - Linnaeus Arboretum Fall Fest - Discover the Arboretum with a Gustavus Naturalist on a guided tour at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, or 2pm. Stop by the tree care and master gardener booths to visit with experts and find out how you can become a Friend of the Linnaeus Arboretum.

10:30 a.m.       Seminar: History of Gustavus and Building a Greater Gustavus Tornado videoSt. Peter Banquet Room, Jackson Campus Center   

10:30 a.m. - Seminar: Parenting Successful College Students – Heritage Banquet Room, Jackson Campus Center - Talk with Gustavus faculty and staff about your college student’s academic and personal development.

11:30 a.m. - Homecoming Parade – Pittman Hall to Norelius Hall around Campus Drive

11:30a.m. - 1:30 p.m. - Homecoming Carnival Lunch – Evelyn Young Dining Room - Lunch available ala carte in the Gustavus Market Place, souvenir photo buttons with Gus the Lion, cotton candy, face painting, live music, and popcorn. A special Mind Games illusionist preview will also be occurring throughout the dining room.          

1p.m.  - Women’s Volleyball vs. Hamline – Lund Center, Gus Young Court                         

1:30 p.m. - Football Game vs. Pacific Lutheran – Hollingsworth Field

3 p.m. - Weekend Movie UP – Wallenberg Auditorium, Nobel Hall

4p.m. - Women’s Volleyball vs. Northwestern – Lund Center, Gus Young Court

3:30-7p.m.       5th Quarter Post Game Event – Old Hollingsworth Field - Celebrate with Gustie alums, students, families, and friends. The post game event is a great chance to gather with other families and members of the Gustavus community.  Enjoy live music by “The Rockin’ Hollywoods,” grilled meats, salads, sides, 1919 root beer, and desserts as well as an inflatable obstacle course and other games. 

7 p.m. - Weekend Movie UP” – Wallenberg Auditorium, Nobel Hall

7:30p.m. - Mind Games - Alumni Hall, Johnson Student Union - James David has been perfecting his unique blend of magic and humor for many years. James is now one of the best illusionists in the country. His versatility in street and stage magic makes him one of hottest rising acts in the industry. “Mind Games” will have you mesmerized and laughing at the same time.

8 p.m.  - Kurt Elling 89’and the Laurence Hobgood Trio, Jussi Björling Recital Hall - Elling is an eight-time GRAMMY nominee who has spent the last nine consecutive years at the top of the Down Beat Critics poll and the last four consecutive years topping the Jazz Time Readers’ poll. His quartet tours the world continually, performing to critical acclaim in Europe, the Middle East, South America, Asia, Australia, and at jazz festivals and concert halls across North America.

9 -11 p.m.  - Sky Watch – Olin Observatory (weather permitting)

10 p.m. - Weekend Movie UP” – Wallenberg Auditorium, Nobel Hall

Sunday, October 11

10 a.m. -   Holy Communion Worship Service – Christ Chapel - Featuring the Choir of Christ Chapel, Christ Chapel Ringers, and the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra.

11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Jazz Brunch -  Evelyn Young Dining Room - Featuring  the Gustavus Jazz Ensemble & the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band

1:00 p.m. - Dessert Reception and Presidential Address– Banquet rooms, Jackson Campus Center - President Jack R. Ohle will address Commission Gustavus 150 initiatives as well as the “State of the College” with Gustie families. This reception is a great opportunity for families to meet and converse with Gustavus First Term Seminar faculty, administration, and staff.

2:00 p.m.  - Music Performances – Christ Chapel - Gustavus Choir, Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, Gustavus Wind Orchestra, Lucia Singers, Vasa Wind Orchestra.
