Call for Papers, Sigma Xi Undergraduate Research Symposium, 2010

The Gustavus Adolphus Sigma Xi Chapter issues this call for papers to be presented at the 2010 Undergraduate Research Symposium, to be held in Nobel Hall during the late afternoon and early evening of Friday, April 30th. All students who have carried out research projects funded by grants from Sigma Xi are expected to present papers at this Symposium. Any other students who have undertaken scientific research projects as part of regular semester courses, independent studies, or other on- or off-campus programs are also cordially invited to contribute papers. Papers describing work in progress but not yet completed are appropriate. If students are interested in presenting posters, the Sigma Xi-affiliated student posters will be presented in partnership with the Celebration of Creative Inquiry in the Campus Center from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm. Sigma Xi-affiliated posters will be appropriately marked.

Students who plan to present papers or posters should fill out the web-based form at http://gustavus.edu/academics/sigmaxi/SXSymp2009_files/abstract.php no later than Thursday April 22, in order to provide information such as authors, title, abstract, and special requirements. If for some reason you can't use this web-based form, please contact Brenda Kelly, Nobel 206B, x7039, bkelly@gustavus.edu, in order to acquire an e-mail or paper version of the form.

When writing your title and abstract, please use HTML conventions for special notations. For superscripts, precede the superscript by and following it by . Similarly surround subscripts by and .

Speakers are reminded that the audience will include people who may be unfamiliar with specialized terminology (lingo, jargon, perceived gobbledygook) and techniques. Appropriate explanations should be made of such terminology.

Speakers are encouraged to bring exhibits, demonstrations, and audio-visual materials [overhead transparencies, slides, CD's or flash/thumb drives (for PowerPoint presentations), videotapes, etc.] that will quickly convey the points to be made. Papers are scheduled at 15-minute intervals. Be prepared to speak for 10 minutes and allow ~3 minutes of questions. Ask your friends and/or colleagues to come to your presentation, and ask them to ask some questions.  Others in the audience probably will have the same (unasked) questions.

Concurrent sessions will be scheduled if the number of papers warrant. Any questions regarding this symposium should be directed to Brenda Kelly, Nobel 206B, x7039, bkelly@gustavus.edu.
