Description:
The practicum program is designed to meet your individual needs and current experience. It will provide a comprehensive practicum experience, fulfilling requirements for both master’s and doctoral level programs. It is a 20 hour per week, two-semester long training experience, though hours can be flexible according to individual need. Practicum students will primarily be providing individual counseling to Gustavus students. In addition, practicum students will have opportunities to co-facilitate groups, provide outreach programming and assist in training of student leaders. Practicum students are welcomed as members of Counseling Center staff, and will be expected to attend staff meetings and to consult and work with other student affairs departments, especially Health Service, Alcohol and Drug Education and Residential Life.
Supervision:
Practicum supervision includes up to two hours of weekly individual supervision as well as weekly group case consultation and consultation with Health Service. Practicum students choose their supervisor in consult with Counseling Center staff and will work with a different supervisor each semester. Our counseling staff represent a variety of theoretical orientations, training experiences and personal backgrounds:
Stacey Gerken, Ph.D., L.P. (University of Texas, Austin). Theoretical focus: CBT integrated with mindfulness principles. Interest areas: development, depression, anxiety, grief and positive psychology
Lisa Rinehart, L.M.F.T., L.P.C. ((Minnesota State University, Mankato). Theoretical focus: Cognitive behavioral, interpersonal and narrative. Interest areas: Identity, development, perfectionism, family dynamics and positive psychology.
Rachel Slater, Ph.D., L.P. (University of Minnesota). Theoretical focus: Interpersonal, humanistic. Interest areas: Trauma and traumatic grief, identity development, eating disorders, positive psychology
About Gustavus:
Gustavus Adolphus College is a residential, liberal arts college, serving about 2,800 undergraduate students, of which about 13% are students of color. Gustavus is located in St. Peter, Minnesota, about an hour southwest of the Twin Cities and 10 minutes north of Mankato. Application process:
We welcome applications from both master’s and doctoral level students in counseling, family therapy and psychology programs. Candidates are expected to have basic interviewing and case conceptualization skills and priority is given to those with more extensive training or life experience that is relevant to working with a university student population.
