The Guide to Legacy A Capella
Legacy is the premiere performance based mixed a Capella ensemble at Gustavus. It is a collaborative, student-run organization that seeks to deliver high quality and entertaining music to the Gustavus community and beyond.
Mission statement: Legacy a Capella strives to achieve their highest music potential without sacrificing the diverse music needs of their audience, the collaborative quality of their ensemble, as well as to appropriately present the genre of music they sing.
As a member of Legacy you pledge to push yourself to your highest music potential, be accountable to your group, communicate effectively, do your part to add to the Legacy family, and most of all have fun with your new music family.
Legacy Rehearsal Schedule:
Monday: 6:30pm-7:30pm
Wednesday: 6:30pm-7:30pm
Sunday: 6:30pm-7:30pm
Attendance policy: All excused absences will be decided by the elected co-presidents and secretary. An excused absence must be communicated in advance. All absences must be communicated in advance, however is deemed unexcused there is a strict 3 strike policy.
After 3 strikes: Secretary check-in
After 4 strikes: Group meeting
After 5 strikes: Potential removal from upcoming performance or from the group as a whole
Another element to attendance includes performances. Any Legacy organized event is mandatory by all members. If the group is approached to do an outside gig, the group will then decide whether or not to do it based on the percentage of the group willing to commit to said event. The rule is that at least 2 members from each voice part must commit to performing for the group to perform under the Legacy name. This excludes vocal percussion. It is the expectation that the smaller group will uphold the expectation of the larger group, and perform to the standards we hold the entire group to.
Legacy is a collaborative ensemble where each member holds an invaluable position towards to the groups success. The positions are to be applied for, and then elected by the group. All positions and their descriptions are listed below.
Co-Presidents (2): There should be 2 elected officials to fill these positions. They collaborate with your group advisor, Dr. Dean, as well as maintain the law documented in the Doctrine of Love. Their specific roles include monitoring and making sure all other job responsibilities are being handled with care and efficiency. The cooperate with the secretary and treasurer about attendance issues, music needs, as well as financial needs. Their other main task is to hold meeting and facilitate them in the most effective and efficient way possible.
Music Director (1): It is the music director’s job to aid in the decision for choosing music and forming a diverse and cohesive program. The music director will plan out the sets of music. Their main responsibility is to provide the critical musical ear in order to create the ideal Legacy Group sound. They will run rehearsals as well as make transparent rehearsal plans in advance to every and all rehearsals. They will also be responsible for checking balance and blend in all performance spaces and then communicating that to the choreography team in order to aid in their responsibilities.
Secretary (1-2): The Secretary’s job is to keep and monitor attendance for all rehearsals and performances. The secretary also manages all the copying and distribution of music for the ensemble. They are also responsible for setting call times as well as communicating large group information as effectively and efficiently as possible. Assist in managing the Legacy Event calendar.
Co-Event Coordinators (2-3): The role of these members is to seek out high quality performance opportunities and manage the event schedule with the Secretary. They will also be the primary contact for any who wish to book Legacy as a musical act. Their job is to manage and work with sound staff, event staff, and organizational staff for any and all legacy events. They collaborate with other schools and groups at Gustavus as well.
PR/Marketing (2-3): This member is responsible for the visual image of Legacy. Their job is to make sure that the group is maintaining their identity through PR. Their job is to manage all social media and promotional materials for the group. They also organize group photo shoots, video tapings, and it is their job to uphold and maintain Legacy’s image.
Fundinators (2-3): The job of these individuals is to create events and coordinate group events with the goal of creating the Legacy family that we have come to know and. They plan events for the group to bond and to grow closer and closer!
Choreographers (2-3): The job of these individuals is to decide which songs to choreograph and decide how that will look. They will also work with the Music Director to create blocking that creates interest without eliminating the groups abilities to perform at their highest level. They will also coordinate with the Music director to schedule rehearsal time to teach and learn choreography. The choreographers will run these rehearsals.
Each fall Legacy will hold auditions by the entire group to listen to those auditioning for the open spots within the group. These auditions should be scheduled with the other A Capella groups on campus in order to best give people the opportunity to participate in the contemporary a Capella ensembles on campus.
