Help for English Language Learners (E.L.L.)

New international students enjoy the infamous Writing Center couch.
Two great teams
Writing Center staff members help the Gustavus community by serving on one of two teams: the Outreach Team and the Designated Tutor Team. In addition, the Writing Center provides assistance to English language learners (E.L.L.) and students with disabilities. Please contact Rebecca Fremo (rtfremo@gustavus.edu), Andrew Grace (agrace@gustavus.edu) or Laurie Bickett (lbickett@gac.edu) for more information.
- Outreach Team: This team provides workshops each semester, as well as occasional on-site tutoring at the Diversity Center and in the dorms. For instance, this fall the Outreach Team will help first year students understand academic writing conventions at the college level.
- Designated Tutors: These tutors are assigned to specific sections of First Term Seminar (FTS) and other WRITI / WRITD courses. The tutors meet with professors and students in order to provide one-on-one assistance.
One terrific E.L.L. resource
The Writing Center's E.L.L. (English Language Learners) tutoring specialist is Andrew Grace. Andrew works with students whose native language is not English; he works with multilingual students, too. He also consults with faculty members and administrators. Andrew Grace can provide a letter for a student to bring to faculty that explains and supports test taking accommodations, leaving it to the professor’s discretion whether or not to follow the recommendation. It is expected that competency will begin to develop during students' first few semesters. The Writing Center Director, Rebecca Fremo, is also happy to consult with faculty and E.L.L. students.
