Academic Internship Credit Information

 Requirements to Paticipate:

  • Junior Status: Semester long internships (fall, spring or summer) require at least junior status in order to receive academic credit.
  • Summer Tuition: Please note that summer tuition is required to enroll for a summer internship. 
  • A Faculty Sponsor: During the semester and summer sessions, your Faculty Sponsor is typically your academic advisor. It is important that your Faculty Sponsor be familiar with the industry you are interning in.
  • A Site Supervisor: Your Site Supervisor will be who you report to at your internship site. While you can work in a relative's office, they cannot be your Site Supervisor.

1. Obtain an internship 

Explore internship opportunities by interest area, browse through Handshake using your Gustavus email, or schedule an appointment to meet with a Career Development Specialist (to schedule an appointment, call 507-933-7575 or stop by Career Development in the lower level of the Jackson Campus Center).

Once you have identified an internship, read through this Quick Guide for some tips on making initial contact with potential internship supervisors.

2. Complete registration form

Fall or Spring Semester Internship: **2016-2017 Internship Registration Form is not currently available. Check back Summer 2016.**

: 2015-16 Internship Registration Form AND Summer Session Registration Form

Forms can be submitted to Career Development once the student, the Faculty Sponsor, and the Site Supervisor have completed and signed off on the appropriate portions of the form.

3. Submit registration form

Students who seek to earn academic credit for an internship must submit all required completed registration forms by the applicable deadline (listed below) to Career Development, for approval.

Time Requirements and Credit Information:

Interim Career Exploration

 4 weeks  1 credit=30+ hours per week

4. Registration Approval

Career Development will review and approve completed registration forms and authorize the Registrar's Office to add the internship registration before the applicable deadline. The Registrar will then register the student for the number of academic credits requested. The internship course should appear on the student's schedule in WebAdvisor within ten business days.

5. Orientation

Once your application form is turned in and before you begin your internship, you will be required to complete an orientation. The orientation will describe your assignments, go over what to expect during your internship and help you feel at ease going into the work environment. Once your registration information is received, you will be notified of the steps to complete orientation. 

6. Assignments

Career Development requires that you complete a few short assignments throughout your Internship or Career Exploration to facilitate reflection on your experience. Your Faculty Sponsor may assign additional work.

  • Reflection Questions Assigned questions will be accessed and recorded through InterviewStream (use your Gustavus email address to log in). These questions are designed to help you reflect on your internship and learn to articulate what you have learned and gained from your experience. These skills will be crucial when interviewing for your next internship or a job after graduation. 

    InterviewStream requires the use of a webcam. If you do not have private space, Career Development has space where you can record your answers in private. 

  • Informational Interviews Informational interviews should be conducted with individuals whose careers are in the industry you are considering. Through the interview you will want to learn more about the career path and the true nature of the work. Informational interviews are also great opportunities to build your network!

  • Updated Resume An updated resume, including information on your internship, should be posted to your Handshake account. Resume information is available online or in Career Development. It is beneficial to update your resume while the experiences in and contributions to your internship are still fresh. 
  • Evaluations At the end of the internship your Site Supervisor will complete an evaluation of your work. It is beneficial for you and your Site Supervisor to review the evaluation and discuss the experience. Once completed, the evaluation will be delivered by you or your Site Supervisor to the Career Development Internship Director, Janine Knutson. A copy of the evaluation will be shared with your Faculty Supervisor prior to grading.
